In the age of electronics, Nilgiris library promotes reading through book club

UDHAGAMANDALAM: In an age of electronics where the habit of reading is facing a losing battle, the Nilgiri Library is making valiant efforts to revive it by conducting book club activities, hosting cultural events and scheduling story-telling and reading sessions for children over the last two years. The library is located in a Victorian building with striking gothic style architecture, on Commissioner's Road in Ooty.
Members of the book club meet every second Saturday to discuss the book selected for the month. This past Saturday marks the beginning of the third year of the club. "It is an interesting experience. It is not necessary to agree with popular sentiment regarding the book. You are free to agree or disagree with the reviewer or ideas and concepts of the author," said Kamala, the coordinator of the book club.
The book to be read is announced well in advance, usually three months before the discussion happens. The reviewer chooses the book to be read. This coming Saturday the book to be discussed is 'The Secret Life of Plants' by Christopher Bird and Peter Tompkins. Ravindran Govindan, who chose the title, will review the book followed by a debate on its content among club members.
Members really look forward to the Saturday meetings. In fact, one member who knew that she would be missing one such meeting sheepishly asked if it could be recorded. Another member, Dr Kousalya would like to meet every week. "These meetings are very gratifying," Kamala said. A few recently reviewed books include White Tiger by Aravind Adiga, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and The Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway.
The 150-year-old library also conducts reading and storytelling sessions for children. A small children's corner has been identified inside the library for the purpose. "Children are very enthusiastic about the reading sessions and they participate actively," said Kamala.
A garden club has been formed by the library members to maintain the area surrounding the library building. "We want the library to be a hub of cultural activities," said Ramakrishnan Nambiar, secretary of the Nilgiris Library. About 40 saplings of indigenous trees were planted inside the campus a few days ago.
The library also organizes talks by authors, audio visual sessions, dance and music programmes to draw more members. They also plan to come out with a cinema club. Last week it screened the Oscar award winning Iranian movie, The Separation. The screening was sponsored by INTACH, the Nilgiris chapter. "We plan to screen art movies and award winning movies for our members," said Nambiar.
The cultural activities organized have attracted another 150 members to the library. Presently, the library which houses more than 40,000 books, some as old as 400 years, has 600 members.
Run by a committee, it came into existence in 1858 to cater to European readers. Among visitors to the library are many distinguished personalities including I K Gujral, former Prime Minister of India, Fatima Beevi, former Governor of Tamil Nadu and Rajam Krishnan, a renowned writer.

Affiliated colleges of Bharathidasan University are not serious about securing NLIST access

Affiliated colleges have so far shown tepid response to the opportunity created by Bharathidasan University through its library to access NLIST (National Library and Information Services Infrastructure for Scholarly Content) resources constituting thousands of text and reference books at graduate, postgraduate and research levels, in addition to 3,000 scholarly journals.
By networking at regional, national and international level, the library is able to provide affiliated colleges access to enormous scholarly information through inter-library loan and online document delivery service, on payment of a registration cost of just Rs.5,000 to the INFLIBNET (Information and Library Network) director. According to Vice Chancellor K. Meena only 23 colleges have registered so far despite repeated requests to principals.
The university library, she informed, would network bibliographic databases of its own documents and those of affiliated colleges, and provide the user community online access to catalogues. The university plans to conduct an awareness programme and a workshop on accessing and using scholarly information resources and systems in collaboration with INFLIBNET, DELNET (Developing Library Network), and other information agencies.
The initiative, said Srinivasa Ragavan, librarian and head, university library, would bridge the gap between the resource-rich libraries and smaller ones in colleges where the budget for books is less.
Meanwhile, Bharathidasan University has signed an MoU with INFLIBNET and is one among 25 universities in the country to receive UGC sanction of Rs.11.5 lakh (second largest) in first phase for digitisation of all submitted Ph.D theses.
This would pave way for students, scholars and teachers to seamlessly access full text theses and approved synopsis of Ph.D. programmes of various subjects through the university website.
A press release said the university has sustained its fifth rank position at national level for the fourth consecutive year for using scholarly resources through UGC Infonet e-resources consortia.
During 2011, the university faculty and students downloaded 5,40,571 research articles and book chapters for academic and research information needs, compared to 2,94,338 the previous year. By virtue of subscribing to Springer e-books, Scopus, India stat, and other databases, the university has over 1.5 lakh downloads of journal articles and e-book chapters.
Referring to the Web of Science, the global indexing database for scholarly research, the release said Bharathidasan University research index has received a global citation score of 18000.
With h-index ranking of 51 (3rd rank in the State), the score of 7.62, as average citation per article, propped the university to second rank in the State as on June 15, 2012.

Online lending library gives reading a new lease of life

School students enjoy a story-telling session.
School students enjoy a story-telling session.

But with school students increasingly being hooked to their laptops and iPads, the worry is that many in the current generation might never fully appreciate the joy of books. For years, libraries have been thronged by children searching for their favourite authors or preparing to spend a lazy weekend curled up with a novel in hand.

But the same technology that snatches away the joy of holding a book also seems to find a way to keep the current crop hooked to it. Along with all other goods and services that have gone from brick and mortar to their online avatar, so have libraries.
Online lending libraries have become a popular way of piquing interest among today's children to give book reading a shot, much to the delight of parents and teachers.
One such initiative that has seen success is iloveread.in (skip the dots and pronounce it)
“ILR was founded by Amrutash Mishra and Sahil Gore in Chennai, and launched in Coimbatore early this year.

People have the liberty to browse through a wide collection of books belonging to every genre possible and get them delivered with just a click.
We have tie-ups with several schools in Tamil Nadu where we have begun the Book Lovers Program for Schools (BLPS). A series of activities at BLPS equips teachers to handle storytelling sessions for the children.
The stories complement the curriculum and are for students upto class 8. It's a great platform for them to be exposed to the wonderful world of stories. Add-on libraries are also implemented in schools”, says R. Anitha, who runs ILR in Coimbatore.
“We conducted an interactive event recently in Coimbatore, and it was a great success. Ms. Shilpa Krishnan,a veteran storyteller from Chennai and a part of the BLPS program, enthralled kids in a fun session. She also spoke to parents about the importance of art in a child's life”, she adds.
Anitha signs off by saying, “In order to ensure we keep up with emerging trends in reading, we add atleast 400-odd books to our library each month.
People who aren't net-savvy can register and avail the service by phone as well. We have plans to infuse corporates with the love of reading soon too!”
Maya Gowri, a working young mother from Coimbatore comments, “My youngest son Vishwa is in class 4, and as much as I'd like to take him to the library every week, we parents sometimes do not find the time.
An online library is a great opportunity for us to inculcate the habit of reading in him, and through the convenience of a laptop.
Also, it's very useful for working professionals like me to come home and catch up on some much-needed lost reading from over the years!”
